Calling Junk Mail, "Spam", has probably hurt the sales of spam because it has given the word a negative connotation.

I like this question.
Can you imagine all the people who get loads of junk mail, get annoyed by it and then one of their friends buys them more in a can as a present. "look more spam". I think it could only have helped. Do people still eat it? It used to be typical C-rations rubbish, fine if your starving.

I would guess that it does more harm than good. Look what happened to that slimming course called "Aids", they went bankrupt within a year of the discovery of the other Aids.
Edit:
I like spam

probably neither, since,
1) both are cheap
2) noone asks for it
3) it's there when you don't want it
4) and both leave a bad taste in your mouth.
