I'm asking because I've lived there all of my life and you'd be surprised how many people don't know that its a state. I didn't want to say that, because it ruins the question because people who didn't know won't answer truthfully but, you all have to be smart asses....

Nope, no surprise!

You're not the only one with that problem....I live in Spain...and you'd be surprised how many people think it's in Mexico,...simply because we speak spanish...

It's sort of like when poople here in Yahoo! Answers ask for spanish recipes, and get tacos and guacamole for an answer....when the recipes in Spain have nothing in common with mexican and latin american food!...

Yes, I do know that N.M. is a state, as a matter of fact, my best friend lives near Santa Fe in a small town called Rio Rancho.
He went there on vacation several years ago, and fell so in love with it that he moved there when he retired 3 years back... And as a xmas gift he's subscribed me to the New Mexico state magazine every year since ( I just got my renewal notice for this Xmas!).So I'm rather up to date on things new mexican...
Your state is magnificent...The mexican, indian AND spanish heritage very important and interesting. The landscapes superb
and the people varied and very welcoming....
You live in a place blessed by the gods!!!
I would love to go and visit, although my finances won't allow that for the moment! (You even have a landmark that bears the same name as my husbands family TOME)...
:-)

No, it really doesn't. What dose surprise me is that people don't know that New Mexico is apart of the U.S. Sounds like American Geography classes needs to get better.

You think you've got problems? I was standing IN ALASKA and I met a girl who forgot that Alaska was a state. Whoops. Idaho gets the treatment too, "isn't that where they grow potatoes?"
