Kryptonite! The one substance that robs Superman of his powers and weakens him. I believe that the element is left over from his destroyed homeworld, krypton. It some how inhibits the power Superman gets from our yellow sun.
In the movie, Lex Luther combined kryptonite with the crystals he stole from Superman's Fortress Of Solitude. When he used the crystals to create the island continent, the entire island itself rendered Superman immobile... making it Lex Luther's ideal location for a showdown.

the island lex created was made of kryptonite, the radioactive material that is the remains of the planet krypton. it weakens superman to the point of near death. remember when lex mentioned the crystals taking on the properties of the minerals around them? he was refering to the green kryptonite cylinder he had encased the crystal in that was launched into the atlantic.

Kryptonite was in the crystal all around him .. he was weak, aka having mortal weakness ... so they beat the crap out of him.
When Lex shot the crystal into the ocean, you'll notice he put a piece of kryptonite around it .... so the crystal would absorb it's properties throughout, making the whole crystal fortress contain kryptonite.

they laced their new Continent with Kryptonite(the green sleeve of rock around the Crystal they launched into the sea), and Lex Shivved him with a jagged piece that he kept in his pocket

Because who ever wrote the movie was a complete and utter idiot...Instead of action that we wanna see from superman they wanna give us some depressing drama!DUMB!!I hated superman returns but I still bought it go figure
