Take a look. The writing and language are superior and there tends to be less ideological name-calling. It is not that these problems do not exist elsewhere, but it is noticably less common on the international pages. What does this say about America with respect to the rest of the world?

Hi there, I am myself not an American. And so, my view may not coincide with many of the people here, but nonetheless...

Much of the technological progress of the past and present century has happened in your country. As a consequence of this (as well as the way your nation was founded), America has developed a culture of "openness" in just about every regard. "It's a free country". In marked contrast, many of the other nations around the world still have their social taboos and norms, and so politeness is a must at all times. Also, because English is not our native language (it isn't mine), many tend to read and write exactly as they are taught in schools. Hence, the lack of colloquial expressions, slangs and vulgarities simply because they have not internalised these forms.

You may also note that those countries who have recently acquired internet on a broad scale may well follow the style of discourse you claim here, unless they really make an effort to retain their previous social norms over the internet. The fact is that over the net, you may indulge in all manner of things that is completely unthinkable when in the 'real world'. You are less likely to insult a person in his face.

So in conclusion, the freedom of speech concept in your culture combined with the nature of the internet (protection via anonymity) could be the answer to your question.

If we are so inferior why are you still hanging out here? Or is just that you want to bash Americans?
Is this a sample of the "higher" level of discourse from say Malaysia: Sounds like people are asking the same questions in Malaysia as they are in the USA.

I dip in and out of American and UK answers as I am interested in the variety of answers given.
Have received numerous informative, sensitive, responsible and supportive responses from both communities.
Have also received an equal number of nonsensical, arrogant and belligerant responses.
Not always apparent which country your answer comes from.
