I have no problem w/ it whatsoever, wear what you want, believe what you want, and I'll be your friend, now, on the other hand, act like a stupid bigoted moron, and we've got a problem.

Perhaps because we might feel that the individual woman has had this forced upon her rather than having a choice. In some countries the males make the decisions for the females and in other countries it is a matter of choice. In those patriarchal societies it seems often that there are two different standards and that women have no say in matters of law, family, religion etc. In western culture this also exists but many woman have fought to have equal rights to choose for themselves and this also means the right to wear the hijab if they wish. It must be their choice. If they choose to allow others to impose their beliefs and customs on them, well that too is a choice but one that will not necessarily be shared by others.

Im so afraid to answer this for fear of being misinterpreted! Anyway, here goes,

I think the sight of a woman in a Hijab is disturbing to some westerners because we are not use to it. It is very easy for us to misintrepret the meaning of the veil.

When we look at someone, we all make judgements. We need to. We need to quickly deceide if someone if friendly or a threat. Do we know them or are the a stranger? Do we approach or retreat? We are animals - this is what we do. It's not being judgement at this level, just a survival skill. It's animal instinct in us.

When someone is covered up, it makes it very difficult to make these decision - we find it unsettling, especially for westerners who are not use to seeing the Hijab.

IJust by natural instinct, we are disturbed and upset. Logic say this covered person must be hiding something. The fact that these veils and Hijabs are dark in color only fuels the fire.

I dont know - just my thoughts.

The reason for the hijab is because in mohammads time men didnt want their wives two timing them. So mohammad introduced a law that makes women "keep their respect" by not enticing men to rape them. Thats how it is in islam; women are blamed if they get raped because they didnt wear their hijab! This is how it is in every islamic country. Thats probably one of the most vile laws ive ever heard, so thats why im disturbed every time i see women wearing a hijab. You dont want to say its so that men dont blame you if they rape you, you want to present it in a good light so you say it's for keeping your respect.
