I realize that footballs are not cheap, but they have to be a tiny part of a NFL team's overhead. So what's with the nets on field goal attempts? Wouldn't the possibilty of catching a ball make end zone seats more attractive and thus cover the cost of a few footballs?

True, but there's a safety issue, too. People would fight so hard for those balls, if for no other reason than to post them on eBay, that people would get hurt.

Actually you are allowed to keep a ball if it goes into the stands. The nets in back of the goal posts are strictly for safety reasons.

They can keep the balls - you'll see players flip balls to the stands quite often after touchdowns or big plays. They just pull the nets up for kicks for safety/liability reasons.
