Subduction zones, where one plate is going underneath another, are prime places where volcanoes can form. Examples are all around the Ring of Fire, such as Mount St.Helens, Mount Fuji, Mount Pinatuba etc.
Diverging Plates, where plates are moving apart such as in the mid-Atlantic, can create Volcanoes and intense geothermal activities. One example is Iceland, or Mt. Kilimanjaro on Africa's Great Rift Valley.
Hotspots can also cause volcanoes. Hotspots are weak crustal areas where magma can rise through cracks in the plates, and create a Volcano. Examples include the Hawaii chains, and the Yellowstone crater in the Yellowstone National Park.
Basically, a volcano can be found anywhere magma can rise up through the plates, and penetrate through to the surface.

Volcanoes occur everywhere on Earth, but most of them happen along plate tectonic boundaries. Tectonic plates are immense moving sections of the Earth's crust. Where two or more plates collide or rub against each other the resulting heat melts the rock deep beneath the surface. When this molten rock (..called 'magma' or 'lava') finds cracks it moves upward and may eventually erupt as a volcano.

Dormant, but will wake up any time : Barren, India
Dead: Popocatipetle; Mexico
I recommend you to download Nasa World Wind and use the built in Scientific Visualization Studio to find volcanoes and eruptions, LIVE!!!

volcanoes are found at the point of intersection of two or more tectonic plates. One such area is the circum - pacific - RING OF FIRE, this area is the most seismically and volcanically active area in the world. it includes phillipines, japan, the islands west of the USA and many other countries
