MapleWood or Pine It's okay to use most Types of wood, but Porous types will absorb alot of water and will in turn be heavier. The best coating is the natural Coconut oil, which surfers of Hawaii constantly apply on their boards. It's Eco-safe! Be sure to tie the ends very tight otherwise your raft will fall apart to a pile of logs/sticks XD.

there are a lot of web sites that discuss raft building. the most popular material for raft floatation is plastic barrels (as in 55 gallon). you can also use 30 gal plastic barrels or pvcpipe. regarding bike inner tubes, they are probably too small to be a realistic floatation devise. one cubic ft. of water weights about 60 lbs, so a 1' x1' x1' box will displace a cubic ft. of water. you can use this as a guide. I'm not going to try to compute the cu ft (or inches) that a 20 inch bike inner tube will displace, but it much less than a cu ft. and higher pressure would not make a difference. you may find a cheap source for plastic drums, like your local commercial car washes. hope this helps

I think the best overall would be bamboo. It already has sealed chambers that are water tight and the wood itself is very durable. A friend of mine grew up in Okinawa and he and his friends made rafts of bamboo all the time.

What do you mean by a raft? Plywood, or marine grade plywood made into rectangular boxes for floatation, filled with foam, and then the seems wrapped with fiberglass tape and then epoxied for protection from water, and then maybe bottom painted for added protection.
