lost or stolen why arent people able to wait till they arrive at work or home until they use a pc? in todays rush and busy lifestyle laptops are just inviting trouble when being used in public.

Yes and Yes.

A laptop will cost double the amount as a desktop with the very same capabilities. But a lot of people are into the whole "me too" attitude and think that they just HAVE to have the latest toy.

Some of us take work home; with a laptop, all my files are with me all the time. Otherwise, I would need a stack of DVDs (or a bigger stack of CDs). My employer isn't interested in buying two machines for me, either -- but I am oncall about one week out of every ten and need to be able to get on the computer and work when there is a problem. Work usually leases the laptops for 3 years and they are usually in good condition when we turn them in.

I also have a personal laptop. I travel, since I do not live near the rest of my family, and I like to be able to get online and check email and answer questions without either packing a PC & monitor, finding an Internet cafe or waiting a week or more until I get home. I also don't think it is "inviting trouble' to use them in public as long as you are reasonably cautious about where and when. Since Panera Bread (among other restaurants) now offers free wireless access, it is handy to be able to pick up the laptop and head to lunch -- instead of running out to lunch and bringing it back to my desk. Some days just don't allow time to escape to lunch without laptop -- esp. when I am oncall!

can a stockbroker, or photographer or many other people with many other jobs wait till they get home to use their pc?

stockbrokers need online information quick inorder for them to do their job.

photographers need to download pictures and upload maybe..they need to take their pictures everywhere.

laptops can last a long time if u take care of them.

ive had my laptop for ages..5 years, still works fine.

Wow, that's really judgmental and kind of arrogant. What works for you is not always what works for others.
