I've looked around for iPods and other mp3 players on eBay, and I keep coming up with mp4 players that are cheaper than mp3 players. Let's say all I'm looking for is music playing (mp3 playing) capabilities, is the mp4 player a good decision?

lol good question, however you're not too far off. MP4 audio is actually known as AAC which is the most common file supported by the iPod familiy. All music downloaded from the iTunes Store is AAC (MP4) audio. However, files from the iTunes Store aren't supported on any other device besides the iPod, because of Apple's FairPlay DRM (Digital Rights Management), which inhibits people from pirating music.
