Why is Chicagoland so great? I lived there in the '90s and I now live in South Carolina. I just want to hear your opinions about it. Some people say that Chicago is better than New York, but I really want to know the reasons why. In general, I've always loved living around Chicago (the north suburbs, specifically).

I think it has to do with Chicago's unique combination of big city lifestyle and small city mentality. In the Loop, you're in the heart of the big city - if nobody told you, you'd think you were in New York. But just outside the Loop, you can be in a neighborhood like Roscoe Village, with its cute homes and small shops and think, "I'm in a suburb," and yet, you're still in the city - and there's the L, rumbling by, ready to take you into the Loop again.
There's also a terrific emphasis in Chicago on green space and urban renewal. So, there's plenty of public transportation, there's lots of park space, biking is encouraged. You'd have a tough time biking anywhere in New York. Here in Chicago, it's practically expected. And of course, there's the lakefront, allowing you to step "outside" the city and be in your own little world - kind of like Central Park with more water.
Don't get me wrong, New York is a terrific city, and in many ways nothing compares to it. But in terms of sheer livability and affordability with the amenities of a big city, it's hard to beat Chicago.

It's great because everything is in Chicago. It's big like N.Y but you can go to certain neighborhoods and sub-cities and get the small town feeling. It's always poppin' at whatever time you go out. It is multicultured so you are exposed to all types of people and their cultures. The city is always celebrating those cultures with parades or festivals. It's greatest place on the earth!

Proximity to Milwaukee
Train center of the US
