Arya Samaj (Devanagari: आर्य समाज्, English: Noble Society) is a Hindu reform movement in India that was founded by Swami Dayananda in 1875. He was a sannyasi (renouncer) who believed in the infallible authority of the Vedas. Dayananda advocated the doctrine of karma and reincarnation, and emphasised the ideals of brahmacharya (chastity) and sanyasa (renunciation).
The society was united with the Theosophical Society for a certain time, under the name Theosophical Society of the Arya Samaj.

The Arya Samaj is a reform movement and religious/social organization which was formally established in Bombay in 1875. It's patron saint is Maharishi Dayananda. By patron saint we mean to say that he was the inspiration behind this movement and is taken to be the guide of all those who call themselves Arya Samajees. But Dayanada never referred to either himself or others as Arya Samajees or Arya Samajists.
