@Nightrider. 0 wasn't created by Ramanujan. You might be thinking of Brahmagupta and or Bashkara, the famous indian mathematicians, but they didn't create 0 either. Ramanujan's mentor, Hardy, would have been pretty lost without 0.
I would recommend you go to a library and try to find the book Zero by Charles Siefe. The collection of essays entitled "From Five Fingers To Infinity" and a book on Math history. Shouldn't be tooooooo difficult to find.
As mentioned above, famous mathematicians are Gauss, Newton, Liebniz, Euler, Euclid, Archimedes, Cantor, Tarski and Goedel. Others of note are Cardano (shot himself in the head cuz he got some math wrong), Galois (French, died in a duel over a woman at the age of 21), Cauchy, Lagrange, Hardy, VanNeumann or Zermelo. All interesting guys. You can find all these dudes by doing a yahoo search or looking on wikipedia. Those should point you to other sources. If you want to talk specifics email me. I love math history.

If you know some names you can go to either,
www.mathworld.wolfam.com
OR
www.en.wikipedia.org
and do a search. Alternatively you can visit these sites and browse their categories for mathematicians.
My all time favorite mathematicians are,
Bernhard Riemann
Leonard Euler
Carl Gauss
Augustus Cauchy
Dirichlet
etc.
Hope this helps!

Very early in history?
Ramanujan - an Indian who died at an early age was considered a math genius. His life history in Google.
Zero - Ramanujan came up with this concept. India gave the world this concept. Also, in Google.
Archimedes - a great mathematician. He came up with Archimedes principle while taking bath. Very interesting reading. He was wondering why or how much water is displaced when a large object is immersed in water.
a^2+b^2 =C^2 where the hypotenuse is root 2 of the sides. Great discovery.
Go to Wikipedia and encylopedia britannica for expanded versions. I can't possibly write them all here. Limited space.
Good luck.
