I have seen phones with FM tuner, but why not AM tuner?

AM (amplitude modulation) and FM (frequency modulation) are completely different things. Cell phones already work on FM pricniples. Adding yet another type of receiver would make it impossible to keep the size small, which is a desireable charactersitic most people want. This is not such an issue in the case of a radio.

Cell phones operate on the principles of Frequency Modulation (FM) so it is easier and cheaper for manufacturers to add a few components to modify the circuit to pick up the FM radio band. To add AM reception would necessitate the addition of a completely new set of circuits and sub-systems which would make the cell phone much more expensive and way too bulky.

Usually any type of handheld thing that includes a radio does not have an AM tuner, most likely because AM channels are hard to tune in to.

Most people tune in to FM stations so the demand is great
The response of cellphone companies is to add it as another come-on to buy their gadget.
l've also wanted them to add AM in the future. That's where we often get the real news. .

Yet another reason I'll never get a cell phone. Two of my favorite stations out here are AM:
KHWG, 750 am, Fallon, NV.
KPTL, 1300 am, Carson City, NV.

I think that younger people (15-37) are their target audience. Younger people tend to listen to FM.

AM Requires more electronic circuitry inside. Cell phone is a bit too small to incorporate all of it.
