Rural area with some satellite available but very costly. This is a desktop pc not a laptop like they advertise the EDGE for. Will this global thing work on desktop pc?

If you're in THAT rural of an area, doubtful and Edge network will be available. There are efforts for RF broadband that you could look into. http://www.dslreports.com is a good site to start with.

DSL and Cable are the fastest you can get..... but some providers cut the band width down

if the edge that I have been reading about is the same thing that is a technology for the service providers.. and not for home use

you mean gmrs ? check your cell phone provider...it can be costly like 100 bucks a month and they limit your bandwith

have you looked into residential ISDN? you can use Verizon GlobalAccess in a PC by using a PCMCIA card reader.
