sanguine refers to blood and is a dark, bloodred color.
vermillion is an orangish-red.
cinnabar is a deep red with browninsh tones.
carmine is a rich red, not orange in cast, made from cochineal. cochineal is a red dye that is made from the bodies of the cochineal insect.
port is a dark red that resembles the color of the fortified wine from which it takes its name. other liquids donating their names to the reddish hues resembling them are claret, burgundy, bordeaux, cabernet, merlot, sangria.
there are plenty of red colors to be found in the plant and mineral worlds, too, such as currant, cassis, strawberry, amaranth, red ochre, ruby, rust, etc.
