ok, so here's the deal.

I am in a supervisor, mangager type position and the longest running employee at the small business I work in. My boss, the owner, gives me 8 days a year paid vacation, but, the catch is that I can only take one day at a time and he prefers I only take them on fridays. Almost every time I try to schedule a day we have an argument about it.. On the other hand, other long running employees get 5 days paid vacation which they can take at any time and all in a row, plus they are allowed additional time off to take trips, go on cruises etc. One is allowed 3 whole weeks at christmas and new years. One other has missed 20 days in additon to her vacation.

These are people who get every saturday off and never help when others are absent, who never open or close the store. Why would my boss think they deserve the time off more than me?

I have so many more hours worked at the end of the year!!

I am confused!

Its called favoritsm... It happens at every job!!! I'm the scapegoat that gets blamed for everything at my job also, and its all along the same lines... They're the ones that get away with everything (including extra vacation time and whatever else).. Then the hard working employees like us get treated like crap.. I guess thats what they call life..

Just remember how lucky you are to get any vacation type at all.. My job doesnt give any paid time off.. Sure i could take a month vacation if i really wanted to, but i wouldnt be getting paid for it... I only get paid the hours I work..

Unless, your place of employment has an actual policy for vacation time, then you have no leg to stand on. If you work in Florida, then you really have no leg to stand on since it is a right to work state. Now, if you are under contract and in that contract it specifies your vacation time, then you have a fight and you can threaten with the better business bureau(If I were you, I might call them anyway. A couple minutes on the phone could really help) or even threaten to quit. If he can't spare you for a day off at a time then he really can't spare to lose you for good.

Also, you have to be a reasonable employee if you are relied on so much. You have to give ample notice and can't just say I need off next Friday on a whim. Talk to your boss and see if you can set something up. Ask him when a good, slow time would be for you to take a week off. Let him know you need the time off and you are willing to work with him but he is going to have to find a way to get your job done while you are gone. If he has a month or more notice then he is going to have to deal with it and if he agrees make sure that when this time comes, you will be outta there for vacation and no matter what comes up, you are taking your vacation. Your boss sounds like the type of guy who would have an emergency right when you're about to leave so just cover your bases and good luck.

When I was once approached by my boss to fill as the manager of a small business, one of the undesirable elements of the job was that I was always on call.

In other words, when others didn't show up for work, I'd have to come in if I couldn't find anyone else, even on my day off.

To me, it wasn't worth it for me to take the position.

If you've already talked to your boss about it, why don't you look for something better?

As a federal employee, I get 26 paid vacation days annually. That doesn't include all the federal holidays I automatically get off, with pay.

Good Luck.

Unless you agreed to something when you took your position: your boss has no ground to stand on. Try throwing the word "discrimination" at him/her. Im sure you will get any day off you want after that. If you are worried about using that technique cuz you think you may lose your job. Can you say LAWSUIT

I think u should get another job. Or if u want this job, u should work according to your boss's rules. I should say your boss is not fair. If you are quiting this job, give him a good punch.

Just say "I am taking 5 days in a row." Then do it. I bet he'll shut up after that.
