This lady was mentally ill, as many, if not most homeless are. Just a suggestion from an older man, never give money. Buy food and give to them only. But in this case you had no way of knowing she was crazy. YOU did the right thing, and don't let that discourage you from doing good in the future.
God Bless you and Happy 2007
PS, First time EVER I've heard of anyone refusing $10. Had you offered it to me, I would have taken it and said thank you! LOL

Most all homeless persons have serious mental illness so anything can happen. You did a real good thing trying to help and did nothing wrong. If she was sane and really did not want the $$$ she would have politely declines to accept. this was an extreme situation. Let is go and keep giving.

Well, it's been said that no good deed goes unpunished. Sadly, many homeless ppl want money for booze and if you offer to buy them some food, they'll decline your offer. I saw a special on PBS where some runaways complained that they had TOO MUCH FREE FOOD from churches. If you want to give $, even smaller amounts, give to the Salvation Army. They do good work and help ppl look for jobs too.

Homeless people buy beer with the money they get on the street.
your lady was scared b/c $10 is way more than people usually give, and she thought you might be expecting something from her in return.
Finally, are you sure she was asking for money?
Some people have pride left in them.

Yes, I would have done (and have done) the same thing. Please don't let this keep you from trying to help someone else again. The reaction by this lady is a rare one. She may be suffering with a mental illness.

A lot of homeless people have psychological disorders and don't even like to be looked at, let alone approached. Unless they have a cup or hat or something like that in front of them, I don't give them money.

Geez-oh-man!!! What a thing to experience happening.....
I would not offer money.... Not anymore.....
I have decided that if someone asked me for money, they must answer a simple question.....
For example: "Name the four riders of the apocalypse".....
If they name them, they will get one dollar...... and so forth..... Of course I'll give them three answers.... beyond that, let them prove they are worthy for the money......!!!
your sister,
Ginger

Jare, the truth is that Someone Divine may have led you to try and help. She ( or whatever was plaguing her) may have sensed the Divine inspiration, and reacted. Demons don't like it when light is brought into a situation.
