If you don't know how to work on cars tranny, take it to a shop. Sounds like the Reverse band on the transmission either slipped or is shot. Either way you want a good mechanic to work on it.

This problem varies from car to car
If the car has a transverse engine it could be the gear linkage
If it not transverse it could be a cable failure or may sound stupid
The reverse light switch could be maladjusted or malfunctioning
Try adding some more detail like make and model of the car
Has any work been done to the car prior to this fault

Nearly every automatic transmission has a filter inside of the pan.

If this filter gets too clogged or the tranny fluid gets too grungy.. the reverse gear will be the first to falter.

So change the tranny fluid and filter first and see if that helps any.

"C" clutch in the automatic transmission has failed as this is the only time only c is used. Basically you need a transmission overhaul or replacement.
