1) Dhoni asking for spin: The track in Ahmedabad favored spin enough to get the English batsmen, but Indians could play well, and comfortably clinch a 9 wicket victory. What more did Dhoni wanted? On a dust bowl, it would get equally difficult, and that's what happened. The difference was made by Pietersen and Cook, but other batsmen failed. 2) Indian spinners misread the pitch, same as you say. 3) India's middle order: Yuvraj and Dhoni are wasting 2 slots. Yuvraj clicks once a while, and Dhoni only bats well on batting tracks. Kohli batted with laziness, Tendulkar if failing to find his touch. Except Pujara, none clicked. Openers did a decent job IMO. 4) Spinners: English spinners were awesome. Swann already known to be a world class spinner, Monty did very well. On the other hand, India is failing to find a world class spinner, like Kumble, or past of Bhajji. 5) Captain Cook: He is not only a brilliant batsman but a great captain. A legend in the making. 6) Last but not the least: As I said above, England didn't do well in batting, but Cook is just being awesome, so is Pietersen.

Fat Gatt in 86/87 indeed.
Before that - well we haven't had a lot of success Down Under!
Mike Brearley 78/79 when the Aussies were missing 15+ top players to Packer ... Ray Illingworth 70/71 ... then I think you'd have to go back to Len Hutton in 54/55! (Frank Tyson's series)
And of course the incomparable D.R. Jardine in 32/33 (g)
