I have an AMD 64 Athlon X2 4200+ Processor. What are the guidelines/restrictions for safely overclocking. I have 2GB RAM, 250GB HDD, Visiontek ATIX1300 512MB PCI-E, DVD-RW, if it matters.

read your motherboard manual.. and the first thing you read about over clocking is do it at your own risk... now with you having 64x2 4200 why would you even think about over clocking... you would never get more than 2% increase anyway... but you would get 100% increase of burning your system out (everything) through over heating the processor

Over clock at your will and be prepared to spend another $500 plus on a new motherboard/processor and memory and the other PCI cards you have installed.

Overclocking is the process of forcing a computer component to run at a higher clock rate than it was designed for or was designated by the manufacturer.

Overclocking is usually practiced by PC enthusiasts in order to increase the performance of their computers. Some hardware enthusiasts purchase low-end computer components which they then overclock to higher speeds, while others overclock high-end components to attain levels of performance beyond what they were designed for.
