A Japanese PS3 Should Work Fine In The US..
The Japanese Plugs Are The Same And Uses The Same Voltage As US, So That's Fine (1)..
As For The System's Language, You Can Set The Language To English Easily (2).. (note that this only changes the system's language, not necessarily the game's)
As For Game Playing, The Blu-Ray Disks Have The Ability To Play In Multiple Areas Because It Has Enough Space To Carry Different Versions, So That's Fine..
However, The PS3 Will Only Play PS2 Games Of That Region For Some Reason, Meaning A Japanese PS3 Will Only Play Japanese PS2 Games..
(note, however, that not all ps2 games are fully compatable with the ps3) (3)
As For Online Usability, I'm Not Sure How That Will Work Out. I'm Guessing That The The Japanese PS3 Will Connect To A Japanese Network, Like For Getting Updates And Accessing The PlayStation Store, And Maybe Also Accessing A Japanese Server For Chat/Messaging Funcionality..

Yes, it is essentially the same as the US version, the only difference is is that the US version is programmed so that it cannot play Japan games.
Reason: Japanese games tend to be more graphic and violent (the M rated ones or w/e ratings Japan uses) and the US has to be "safe" and "wholesome" so violence to that extent isn't allowed.... stupid huh?
But anyway... yes, it will work here. There is (or probably will be, I know that there is one for the PS2) somesort of programming you can preform on your PS3 to enable it to play Japanese games. Of course they will be in japanese, not english, so its kinda worthless... unless you know japanese or don't care because you love violence.
