a real easy song to learn is Give by the band Cold. there is one tricky part, well it would be tricky for a beginner, about 2/3rds the way through but its just the same note played over and over, you just gotta listen for a strum pattern. otherwise everything else is just straight 8th notes. really easy.

but since your starting you might want to learn the chords first. it'll give you a basis for things. the song Knockin on Heavens Door has real easy rythm guitar. its just a G chord, to a D chord, then you play C twice. Each chord is strummed like this.....down down up up down up. so you play that with the G chord. then you play all that with the D chord. then you play it with the C chord and then the C chord again. back to G. its easy once you get the hang of it.

another fun song to play is Fade to Black by Metallica. that song is hard to play. like really hard. i've been playing for 2 years and bass for 4 and still don't know how to play the whole thing. but the chords in the verse are Am, C, G, Em. and that is a good set of chords to play that sounds good.

learn the chords. like A, Am, E, Em, C, D, Dm, G, Fm. and then mess around with them. Good transitions are always like C to Am or Am to C or C to Fm or Fm to C or D to G or G to D or Dm to G or G to Dm. those are all easy ones to transition to.

a really easy song to learn once you have your transitions down is Man on the Moon by REM.

as far as learning songs goes, you will run into a lot of problems figuring out how stuff is played. i know cuz i've been there. give it a couple days and try again. but try to fool around with chords for a lil while and get an idea of finger placement and basic theory. a great website to go to is www.wholenote.com . when i first began, and i still do today, i go there and just pick out lessons and try to learn more and more stuff. i'm completely self taught, so it is possible. but ya, just try to learn a lot of little things. even if you can't learn a whole song, if you learn one riff to a song it will make you that much better. and it will give you idea's for later too. guitar playing should be fun! so don't stress out with it or anything like that.

i don't know any of the popular stuff on today cuz i can't stand listening to radio rock. there isn't much talent in any of that stuff. so sorry i oculdn't mention anything popular.

if you've really never even picked up a guitar before then just pick a chord and strum it forever. learn that chord. your fingers and hands will hurt but give it a month. if you play everyday for a month it won't hurt and you'll see the improvement. its a great hobby to have and its a good release from everything. so i encourage you not to give up if you don't get it right away.

now go be a rock star!

A song that only needs two chords (C and G7 or G and D7)
He's Got the Whole World in His Hands

and Em and D or Am and G:
What Do You Do with a Drunken Sailor

A pretty easy Christmas song (long times on the same chord)
Joy to the World

Lots of folk type songs only need three or four chords.
They're maybe not the coolest but they're easy to start with.
