This is only a suggestion, but the same thing used to happen to me all the time. I realized that the exhaust fans on the bottom of the laptop weren't able to keep the laptop cool because I set the laptop on my couch. This pressed the laptop into the couch which restricted airflow. Make sure your laptop is sitting on hard, level surface so air can get underneath it to the fans.

I have the same problem with my laptop. It mostly happens when I put it on my couch or bed for a long time. To avoid this, I keep it on my wooden desk. Make sure that the vents are free of dust/dirt and try not to place anything too close to your laptop.

Either your fans are going out, or you're using it in a location that doesnt allow air circulation.

I use mine while its laying on my bed...which blocks its vents and doesnt allow the air to circulate. Perhaps you should get a stand for it. www.apple.com sales a few models

Are you sure it's overheating? My HP feels very warm on my legs, but they all run at warm temperatures. As long as your fan is going, it shouldn't be overheating under normal circumstances.
