Tons of jobs, really, probably the best job market in the USA.

And the cost of living isn't that bad, compared to the east coast and california anyway.

Yes, I have heard that too. I am a teacher and Las Vegas is the biggest school district in the whole country. They are always recruiting teachers from out of state. However, the pay is not all that great and teachers often cannot afford to rent housing, let alone to own their own home.

There was an article in the NEA (National Education Association) magazine this fall about teachers in Vegas and how many of them cannot afford the cost of living and after a year or two they go back to wherever they came from. It's a shame because I would like to move there - I love hot dry climates. But I also want to be able to own a house.

The cost of living has increased quite a bit in Las Vegas in the last several years. Fortunately, we have no state income tax, and there is a 3% annual cap on property tax increases, so that helps. However, Las Vegas has one of the most competetive housing markets around, so depending on what you are looking for and on what side of town you want to move to, it is likely to be more expensive than other places. The city of North Las Vegas, on the other hand, has experienced some of the highest job growth in the country, although parts tend to be a bit dumpy. Sales tax in Clark County is also a little high at 7.75%, although I'm still not quite certain why it is so high.

Honestly, I wish you luck in finding a place you can rent or mortgage for under $1800 per month. My dad bought his 3400 sq. ft. house in 1993 for 180K and it's now worth over 600K. That's how much things have gone up, even though the housing market has cooled quite a bit.

I have family there. An apartment runs around 900 a month, houses to rent are typaically from 1,000-1,500 depending on the area. Also, if you're looking to buy a home, they range from 150,000- to millions. So, it depends on where you're comming from if it's high. Living in Reno, Vegas is a lot cheaper to me! One thing is the food is really cheap if you go out to a casino, and it's usually pretty good. There are tons of jobs out in Vegas. If you get a good job, it shouldn't be too hard to make it out there.
Also, call ahead or look on the Vegas Police Department website about high crime areas. That way, you can move your family into the safest area possible. Good luck!

Yes... it is high! I've been a few times, since it's only a 4 hour drive from me and my dad lives there. He pays $1000 a month for rent on a double wide trailer.

My cousin lives there. I'm sure there's plenty of jobs. His daughter is a dealer at the Palms. His entire family works, so I'm sure the cost is high.
