Coal came first. Metallurgy and raw materials came second. Even by the time of the Anglo-Dutch wars, the English were easily building much bigger and more powerful guns for their ships. It is understandable that the English would pioneer the Industrial Revolution because of their energy and wealth of ores, which were quickly transmuted into steam engines, railroads, etc. It is fitting to notice that the other competitors in the industrial revolution (ie. Germany and later the US) all had readily available domestic supplies of coal (energy) and metal ores. Nations who did not have these two resources were reduced to providing other raw materials to industrial states, or slunk back into banking and finances as neutral (and therefore safe) havens for the industrial competitors. The forests and harbors were terrific resources, but they had already been useful in the pre-industrial "Age of Sail," during which the Royal Navy pretty much gained control of global commerce. This gave them a market for the new industrialized goods.

If i could summarize (leaving a lot of things behind) the positive effects of the industrial revolution era, i would say "increased productivity by introducing machines and procedures to the production process"

Wikipedia-----
The Industrial Revolution was the major shift of technological, socioeconomic and cultural conditions in the late 18th and early 19th century that began in Britain and spread throughout the world. During that time, an economy based on manual labour was replaced by one dominated by industry and the manufacture of machinery.
