Seattle has always rained. No matter what, when it is really rainy, people completely lose all sense of driving and traffic becomes a frightful nightmare.

i have lived here since 1985, and seattle drivers are horrible no matter what, but during the rain (which is very frequent, especially this year), traffic turns upside-down. it's not people that are new to the city. it's almost everyone. and when it snows the WHOLE city shuts down and can't operate. funny.

Although I understand exactly what you mean, to be fair, I believe that this is not an issue that is inherent to Seattelites, but to human beings.
You see this in places where they get black ice, do people slow down?
No.They speed up!
It makes no sense, no sense at all.
I have wondered if it wasn't because people have an overconfidence in their own skill as a driver, ignoring the skill of the other guy, or have just plain bought into that old "it can't happen to me".
I asked this question of a co worker, who during this last bout of bad weather and high winds, came in flustered and upset that she was 10 minutes late due to the weather.
Ten minutes was great!!
She said she had flown like a bat out of hell, swerved in order not to hit one guy, ran two 4 way stops, when the stop lights were out, and I could go on and on.
We need to slow down, be careful, never underestimate the other guy, all the things they taught you in driver's ed or in the handbook.
We just don't do those things.
We're even busy in our cars!!
I know it makes no sense, people say we should know how to drive in the rain here, but I think it's just people.

" I have no clue" It seems like most all of the people in the Seattle area are self centered and don't think of the other drivers on the road. HOWEVER ...It isn't only when it rains or even the few times the area gets some snow, it is almost all the time. Seattle is one of the worst places to drive. I am so glad that I have now been able to move away from the Seattle area.

True. It always rains in Seattle. I do know what you are talking about. And I think its because everybody is so used to a certain pace of travelling, fast and furious and you rely heavily on the driving skills of the other motorists.
Others presume that the playing field is still the same no matter what the conditions are like.
BUT it is not.
You may not get disoriented by the blinding rain, nor the fog in the car windows, but others do. Some forget their lights OMIGOD was that a car that just whizzzed by with no effing lights on in the dark (it is still 4PM but its dark).
Slow down, take 10 minutes more to get home.
Presume that the other drivers are over 90 yrs old and their faces are plastered on the front windshield , eyes peering into the fog, trying to get their bearings. They cannot see you driving alongside..

It doesn't always rain in seattle. It's always gray and cold. There are pleanty of other place in the U.S. that gets more rain than we do. The people who don't know how to drive in the rain are all the people NOT from Seattle who have just moved in the past few years. We've had one of the highest jumps in population because of people from other states. They're the ones who can't drive in the rain/snow/ice because they're not from around here.

It's not just that--we can't drive when it's sunny!!! Just listen to the radio--there are all sorts of traffic slow-downs because we're admiring the sun or the sun is in our eyes or something.
Just accept that we can't drive--but we are more likely to let you cut/merge in front of us that are drivers in many other cities, and we hardly ever use out horns!
Seattle drivers = nice but inept!

I have definately notced that! I dont know what happens. All you have to do is drive more carefully and slow down earlier that you usually would. its a million times worse when it snows though..

How do they steer with coffee in one hand and phone in the other?
I have seen many drivers on the phone who are talking with their hands. Funny if they weren't behind the wheel.
