The book is an excellent review of the failings of prior studies of the homeless, a very good primer on ethnographic research methods, and finally, as a brief introduction to the homeless themselves via their own words.

Can't get there from here is an incredibly great homeless book where a large group of homeless people struggle to survive and overcome their homelessness[if thats a word]

There's a book called "Grand Central Winter" that's a collection of stories about being homeless. It was written by a homeless man named Lee Stringer. I haven't read it, but Kurt Vonnegut has raved about it, so I imagine it's got to be good.
