I try, but sometimes I don't have the money to tip what I'd like to. I always try to tip at least a dollar. If I have money and the meal is great I will tip $3 for lunch and $4 for dinner. I always tip my hairdresser $5 because I go once a year and she's great, plus the haircut is very low in price and the best cut anywhere. There comes a point in time that you cannot afford to tip, but if you cannot then you should at least make a point to thank the person who delivered your food or cooked your food because they usually make less than anyone to begin with.

I personally tip well if I get good service. At most restaurants, waitresses and waiters don't even get paid minimum wage, so their paycheck relies on tips, and even their tips are taxed. I never base the tip on the taste of the food unless I ask it to be fixed and nothing is done. The Waitress/Waiter shouldn't be punished for the cook not doing his job. I expect my drink to stay filled and my plates to be cleared and a friendly manner without being overbearing. If a waiter or waitress is acting out of line and is in danger of losing all their tip with me, I will usually "go to the bathroom" and let him or her know. If the restaurant is really busy they may have just missed your table some how. I also give leniency for how busy the restaurant is.

I want to tell you younger folks something... I have been a server for 20 years and have made a very handsome living. When I started waiting in the 80's people especially young people did not tip well and we all cringed to see them walk in the door. However that has changed over the last decade. For thew most part you guys are awesome! I work in a dinner club? bar and I have some regular customers in their twenties who tip me by the bucket full and I love it!!! Your mama's raised you right! last New Years Eve I made about 600.00 in seven hours can't wait till next weekend! Thank you to all of you that appreciate all that we go through! And yes I tip like you can't believe. Sometimes 50.00 bucks if i know you and like you. more if i bring a guest. And always, always at least 30%.

I normally tip 20% minimum and often 25% or 30%.

Oh of course...upwards 25-30%. I'm in the Industry and know what it's like! And to those people that can't afford to tip...don't eat out! And a 'thank you' DOES not count as a tip...I can't feed my family with your thanks. Go to the grocery with your money and buy some hot dogs...don't let me wait on you and leave me with crap...and then say "hey, thanks though..."
