When the first movie was released in 1977, the budget for the movie was about the same as buying a small house today. But before it was released, the tickets began selling and the theaters were packed for months. Lines began at the theaters and people slept and camped in line for weeks to get tickets before everyone else. The special fx were ahead of their time and the story wasn't designed around a cartoon character or a leading man. The stars were unknowns and Harrison Ford was a carpenter on the set before he was chosen for the part of Han Solo. Most of the effects were simulated with camera effects and magic marker. The story also didn't include any fairy tales or Disney weird stuff that always ends in a song or a happy ending. It was awesome without being stupid. It was cool before cool was cool.

When Star Wars came out in 1977 it was like nothing else before it - the special effects were superb (at the time, and before all the CGI we have these days), and it was a great story with great characters
It was also before all the media hype you get about films these days - so news of the film spread through word of mouth and that made you want to go and watch it!
For us 30-40 somethings it was just amazing and like nothing else and many of us will always hold it dear :-)

If you watched Star Wars in a movie theater in 1977, you would understand it for the miracle it was. The movie was ten years before it's time. Very few movies can say that.
