Do the people who spend all their time in this fantasy world do it because they struggle at living in the real world?

For some it is cheap entertainment. I know a nubmer of players, and I have found that the game is social in nature (you can't get far beyond the early levels without teamwork), but in an alternative setting. While some on that game do not get along well in the real world, I'd be more worried about the people who work, come home, and watch TV whilst doing nothing else.

BTW, I don't play WoW, though I know several who do so casually.

I dont believe we (yes i play) struggle to live in the real world at all, I know when i play i do so as a form of entertainment. I am aware of a few people who will stay online and play this game for over 12hours a day but that really is a small percentage. And the fact that the game requires you to interact with others in a virtual world should surely prove that the gamers are capable of interacting with people online or not. I believe the game requires a large amount of time and focus to really get the full benefits and therefore people can become lost in it for a while trying to get the next level, the same as any other computer game infact! Most guys i know can play fifa football for hours! I think type casting WoW enthusiasts is wrong. Im perfectly sociable, shock horror i even have a girl friend! I think the problem is we are too fast to judge that which we do not understand.

I don't know about that as I have a very limited amount of time to spend in the fantasy world (this site is one of my fantasy worlds, playing like your really making a difference to people) but it could be that people move into a fantasy realm because the "real" world (what's that?) has way too many fun police roaming around.

from the answers given, you can't generalize to all others given what you see locally i.e. with friends and family. this is provides a nice basis for the question but does not solve the problem;; it's bad science to claim so. you need a more diverse sample than people you know.
as for the question, i think it needs to be carefully considered. people undertake games for many reasons enjoyment being the most known. with a game like wow however, there is a chance for profit (selling ones character) and communication beyond a the local. both are obviously positives but your question addressees the obsessive side of the game. do people that obsess with the game, are they inept socially. i would say not all as it might be a possibility but i would not address it as the main problem since they are communicating with many other people within the game, another social network demonstrating that they have social skills. i think it's a combination of ones personality and environmental factors that determine the length and attachment to the game. for example, some one with few local friends and little excitement within their life who is an extrovert would probably take to this game at an extreme manner. now say they move somewhere with a more dense population three years later. the kid might have making more friends seeing as he is an extrovert but probably would keep the same extended game play actions since he has built it into his repertoire as it has provided him with entertainment for those three years. one could compare this to eating and favorite foods. not all obese people have a favor food that they like to eat all the time or not all obese people gorge out (thanksgiving and christmas should constantly remind us of that). it depends upon the person (biological) and their environment

About the same as the people who spend their time posting these questions.

Just a form of fun activity.

I would say no. My husband, who has works for a major law firm and my two sons play, but not to the expense of everything else. I feel it is a good way for them to continue the channels of communication that often fade as our children grow up. One son is 23 and one is 18.

I think so. My friend's boyfriend is a total nutcase who can't get along with many people, and spends his entire day playing that game and/or doing role-play, that's when people dress up and act out things from books or role-playing guides. People like that are pathetic and digust me.

Pretty much, yes. We lived with a guy who played it all the time, and he had ISSUES.
