He would spend everything we had if he had control of the checking account. This year he has spent about $1,000 in one month without knowing what he really bought. I feel badly about being so hard on him about money. But i am constantly afraid that he will spend foolishly and we will be short when it's time to pay bills. How do I let myself trust him again?

Work with him, give him little responsiblities... Help him manage it better...

How about you give him responsibility for something that will only affect him and not you, like his cell phone bill or payments on his own vehicle. Then if he doesn't pay it he can learn about consequences without you being hurt by it. He may need to know how. I would think somebody besides you would do better teaching him since you don't want to have to be his mother. So just trust him in a limited way. Trust is something gained. You probably shouldn't just hand over the checkbook if he can't handle it. Some people are just better with money than others.

Don't trust him.Have second bank account just for the bills,don't feel bad if he has a problem like this you can't do much about it,I guess you guys tried to discuss it...I 'd still be careful.Let him have some pocket change and watch the rest.My friend had the same thing,her husband charged her credit cards up to $30000...

Don't become the MOM or the jailer. Agree to a reasonable amount of personal expenditure without accountability. Let him take it in cash and when its gone that's it for the month. You balance the books and pay the bills. Be a team which will make your relationship stronger. don't resort to nagging which will help him lie and hide from you. Best of luck!

Talk with him about this. If that doesn't work, keep some on the side for yourself, for a time of emergency
