I know the answer to this question.

IM and GM stand for International Master and Grand Master. They are international titles, given out by the F.I.D.E.

First you would have to get your Master title through FIDE, then get invited to Grandmaster tournaments. Then you receive IM and GM norms based on how well you do in those tournaments. You need 3 norms to get the title.

There are other ways to get a title also... I think the winner of the World Junior Tournament (under 21) gets an automatic GM title...

just by practising it.taking part in tournaments.by learning from your looses.go for good coaching according the level you are going to take part.

obviuosly by knowing much about it and by practising and taking part in various competition through college and school. e.g: telegraph school chess competition
