There are so many reasons people are homeless - loss of job and bankruptcy, mental illness, death of a spouse, depression, or just an "I don't care attitude." When I pass them I often wonder what their story is. I wonder the events that brought them to this place. I wonder how I can help - truly help - and not just give a handout. I have never felt fear when seeing them and I have felt sadness but at the same time I just have to wonder in this country where resources are available on every corner how someone can be homeless. I'm not proud enough to say that I could never be in that same position but if I was I don't think I would stay there very long.

Most of the time I just get this uneasy feeling in the pit of my stomach, call it guilty or sadness I hate it. I try to never give them money since it can be used on absolutely anything but if there is a child nearby that I know is w/ them then I give what I can, also if they have animals w/ them, sometimes I feel more sorry for the animals which I guess is bad. But most of the time they are homeless due to their own choices and at any moment they can get out of the hole they're in. A while back a local news station here did a story about the homelessness in my city and more than 3/4 actually chose to be homeless since ppl give them enough money to do what they want w/o worrying about house bills and work. One man was actually very successful and owned his own business that was doing well and one day he just decided to sell everything. After that I now just try to ignore them, especially when I see that they're getting mad at others for not handing them money, which I've seen much too often.

the anwser to your question is this, yes its sad to see someone homeless, but sometimes people put there own selfs there by the way they do, some have had great jobs and even plenty of money but just messed up in life and just gave up,and others have really just been left with no choice at all and some have just been brought up that way when really all they need is a little bit of help and incouragement to get them back on there feet again but thats hard to do these days because into days world everybody is to concerned worrying about there selfs and not other people and thats sad what if it was you who was homeless how would you fill and you would be the only one that knew why you were there, you know its hard to make these kind of decesions unless your in there shoes then you would know what they have gone through so just pray and ask god to help that person even if you cant ok,well thats all that i can tell you

Primarily, I feel grateful that I am no longer in that particular situation. There is a whole lot of coldness in that way of life....in more than one way. Sometimes people's cutting remarks, indifference, and negative pre- conceived notions are far worse than anything nature can throw at you. People can be pretty quick to judge sometimes. I was not drinking or on drugs and I had no criminal record. But it is pretty hard to rise back above it when everyone assumes you are a junky with no morals or you just decided one day to become indigent.
Oh, by the way, I don't just walk past them anyway. I try to say hello and at least offer a kind word. Not everyone is receptive but sometimes things like that gave me a reason to keep trying....Just a thought.

Usually i think its the life they choose.Everyone has the same opportunity as the next person. Some do fall on hard times without help of friends or family but then some are just bums.I know some that hold signs for food but really use the money for crack,,lol.

Intrigued, satisfied with my economic situation, and a bit hostile toward the government.

How did he/she get into this situation?
How did I manage to stay out of this situation?
Would this person be offended if I offered him or her money?

My personal message to the user, "Mr. Curious": I'm so very glad you're extremely proud of yourself for doing homework in school and having the finances to attend college. However, have you considered that maybe not everyone has these luxuries? I had them, but I'm certainly not ungrateful. What about the young woman who came from a very poor family and had to quit school to get a job of her own in order to keep her siblings fed? What about the young girl who was raped, had a baby, and was forced to quit school in order to find work to pay for that baby? I hope your sentiment isn't common, because you're certainly not someone with which I'd enjoy spending any length of my time.

They are homeless because they CHOOSE to be that way - it's their own free will. They have the exact same opportunities every other human being has. So let them make their choices and don't feel sorry for them.

I feel bad, but I also think they can go out and work just like I do. They can work at McDonald's or somewhere. I just think they are lazy or mentally incompetent maybe, but there are places who hire those types......like Goodwill. I hate seeing people on the street corners begging for money. There are so many social programs to help people. I don't give money to beggars.
