The answers above already got it. A bob-tail is a horse's tail cut shorter or bobbed. Then they would tie bells to the tail so that as the horse pulled the sleighs it would jingle jangle.

It's the tails of horses. When the song was written it was back when people would trim their horses tails and put bells on them. The horses tails were trimmed so they wouldn't get into their own manure.

some owners shorten the tails(bob them) of their horses. mainly to cut down on the poo that gets caught... when you ride behind a horse drawn cart or sleigh it can be gross...
