I think you can pretty much rely on the "little black dress" for these occasions. The one exception might be if you know you're going to hang with a specific group of friends that is just generally more casual...then wear what you think will fit in, but maybe with a little flair...or with a funny hat.

if your single and looking then something a little more "fun" and revealing.,...if not then a new dress is always an option, or a nice shirt over a skirt or dress pants
