I will assume you are asking in a studio setting. The main purpose of shock mounts is to isolate the microphone from vibration. All sound is vibration (the sounds we want such as voices or music) but sensitive studio mics can pick up other vibrations (like the motor from your HVAC system) that you do not want. Shock mounts separate the mic from the stand, floor, room, and building you are in so the mic picks up only the sounds you want it to.
