Gerald Ford will be remembered as a caretaker president, who minded the store, but did nothing that distinguished him.

History will probably, unfortunately, all but forget President Ford. He has already been reduced to little more than a page in current encyclopedias, which is unfortunate.
Ford had had a long and distinguished political career before being tapped for the vice-presidency. He then got caught up in the mess surrounding Richard Nixon and Spiro Agnew, through no fault of his own (with the exception of saying "Yes" to Nixon's offer). History should be remember Ford for his career in the House of Representatives, and for getting the nation over the shame surrounding Watergate. He also oversaw the withdrawal of the last U.S. combat troops in Vietnam. Chances are, had he been elected Vice-President before becoming President he would have defeated Jimmy Carter in 1976 and earned himself a full term in office.
