The new router software asks for the internet IP address. Is there any software or program that can detect that for me? Or do i have to call my ISP directly and get it from them?

If you have windows, it's very simple. Make sure your cable/dsl modem is hooked up like always, and have internet connectivity. Don't have your router plugged in at all yet. Once you verify you have connectivity, click "Start", then "run". A dialog box will open, and inside the box type "cmd" (without the quotes), and hit enter.
A black box will pop up with a blinking cursor. Just type "ipconfig" iin that box, and it will display your IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway.

You should have an 800 number for the router manufacturer. Call them and they will help you set it up. They will also help you set up security on that router.

You also need to know what type the internet uses. Dhcp or static ip. If it is Dhcp everything will be set automatically. If it is static you will need to know the ip as well as the other setting which you may have to get from the internet provider.
