the three computers on the 2nd floor are all wireless, and the one on the main floor(upstiars) is wired, but there is a wire running from the upstiars down to the basement from the router. what i'm having trouble with is getting a connection with the 2nd router to do anything with it.

assign a static IP address to router #2 (downstairs) that is out of the IP range of the DHCP server from router #1 and turn of the DHCP server on router #2. If you are not using any wireless devices upstairs turn of the wireless radio to router #1.

the 2nd router will now act as a wireless access point (AP).

Edit:

router #2 will not boost the signal for router #1, they do not operate like that.. since you need router #1 for the 3 computers you don't need to turn off the radio but make sure that #2 is on a different channel than #1.

is the function of router #2 to provide connectivity to the Internet for the Xbox only? if so do you have the right connectors to connect it to one of the LAN ports?

Well, why do you need two routers? Where is the computer - upstairs or down? My computer is in a different part of the house from the modem and router, and all I have is a USB adapter. Using a second router would most likely draw down the signal strength, much as if someone from outside were piggybacking on the signal. My equipment is also Linksys wireless-G.

in case you employ your man or woman router, routing protocol should be set up in both your router and your renter's router. telephone port is necessary on condition that you want an instantaneous connection to the internet (you've your man or woman information superhighway account; you received't use renter's information superhighway). the ideal thanks to develop the relationship isn't to purchase a clean router, yet to purchase a on the spot Repeater. The repeater will extend the selection of the renter's community. you do not favor to make certain routing protocol in any respect.

You could put the routers on different channels, and this should stop them from conflicting. You can do it through the setup if you open a web-browser and browse to the ip address of each router.
