Psychoanalysis is saying goodbye to us. It is estimated that there are only 100,000 people undergoing psychoanalysis in the US and 99,000 of them are Woody Allen. It's time has long passed. Some of Freud's observations were valid, but mostly banal. Much else of his theory and application of psychoanalytic treatment were disasters. Psychoanalysis was never science and now is a fading artistic movement.

Because of the recent discovery of documents proving Freud's illegitimate relationship with his sister-in-law, the Freudian psychoanalysis is under the scanner, and rightly so.
However, it would be wrong to consider psychoanalysis purely in the Freudian view. Many a time, simple behavioral traits could be observed to assess the underlying psychological patterns in people you come across in your daily life. These are devoid of sexual connotatioins and more relevant to their cultural and social backgrounds, combined with the individual's personal experiences.
Psychoanalysis is far from dead, but perhaps it is time to say goodbye to Freudian psychoanalysis, if indeed the recently discovered documents are genuine.

Freudian psychoanalysis is not what insurance companies pay for, they pay mostly for a combination of medications and cognitive-behavioral therapy.
