You would have to be a saint to learn everything by reading a book. I suggest you enrol for a course. Distance learning can be good, and a lot cheaper than fulltime study. The Open University may suit you.
Good luck

Java programming can be difficult if you don't have any prior programming experience. Sometimes it is better to learn an easier language, like BASIC, to familiarize yourself with foundational programming concepts before moving on to a complex, rich language like Java.

Unfortunately, there is no "easy" way to learn Java. Some ways are less hard than others, relatively speaking, but learning a programming language is still difficult. The best answer is to start writing some Java programs and learning what works and what doesn't as you go, with books to guide you. Start with simple practice programs that use procedural logic, and then move on to classes and inheritance. Once you get there, everything else starts falling into place more easily.

If any of your books have example code or step-by-step instructions on how to create some simple programs, start by doing those and then taking the finished programs and tweaking them and changing them to do more sophisticated things.

Books will only take you so far; you need to have hands-on experience in order to fully comprehend it and get the big picture. So, the best and cheapest way to learn the basics is to go to www.howstuffworks.com and find the "How Java Works" section. They will let oyu download for free the software and then take you step-by-step through the process of creating your own Web Page.

to fully comprehend java programming, you must try it yourself..

while you are trying to program some sample programs in your book, try to explore some advance topics and implement it in your program..

also, if you have your internet at home, download the free tutorials at www.sun.com..

hands-on works perfectly if you are interested enough and have a lots of resources..
