My friend called me from the road. He says his remote keyless entry has died out.

He got into his car but the alarm went off.

But, his car won't start when he puts the key in the ignition.

What can/should he do?

His car not starting is not caused by the battery being dead in his key-less entry.

He should get a new battery for his keyless remote. Put the battery in the remote. Then open the hood disconnect the car battery on the positive side. Wait 10 min then reconnect the car battery, then press the keyless remote button to reset the cars eprom. And everything will be better.

Keyless entry is dependent on power door locks. If your Escort has them, you can get it, if not, you will pay extra for the parts to make the locks into power locks. The remote starter itself can be self-installed, but for the couple of hundred bucks, installed, for a basic unit, why not get it professionally installed so you have a labour warranty? The kit to make non-power door locks into power locks runs $50 to $100 (parts only). And yes, there are remote starters for standard transmission cars, and there have been for a long time.
