- Gold is gold

- Plated gold is "another metal" covered in gold (this process is called electroplating)

Both can make a 10k Golden globe that looks exactly the same only "inside one" its weight is made up mostly from another metal i.e. steel

theresfore the differences are

-weight
-quality
-cost
-price
-longevity (gold doesnt rust)

i.e. a gold spoon weights one ounce and costs $500 whereas a gold plated spoon weighs less, will rust and costs $5 to $50

One is totally made of 10k gold and the other is probably other less-valuable metals with only a thin 10k gold covering. Generally the gold wears off after a few months.

Well 10k plated is dipped and wears off. Normally it is silver or something of that nature. 10k gold is 10k gold through and through

Definition: Jewelry or other item with a sheet of gold applied to its surface. Newer items contain markings that indicate how much and what type of gold was used in the layer. Example: a marking of 1/20 12K G.F. means that the piece is at least 1/20th 12K gold by weight. 12K G.P. indicates a layer of 12K gold at least 4 microns thick (deposited by electrolysis). Search Definition: The karat system is used to reveal the amount of pure gold found in an item. 24 karat (24K) gold is pure gold. 18 karat (18K) gold contains 18 parts gold and 6 parts another metal or metals, making it 75% gold. 14 karat (14K) gold contains 14 parts gold and 10 parts another metal or metals, making it 58.3% gold. 10 karat (10K) gold contains 10 parts gold and 14 parts another metal or metals, making it 41.7% gold. 10k gold is the minimum karat designation that can still be called gold in the US. Common Misspellings: The term carat, spelled with a "c," refers to the weight of a gemstone.

Gold plated implies that it is only the outside coating of the object in the gold. The core could be nickel, sterling silver, cheap crap, etc. It does however give the object strength where pure gold pieces are a little more bendable.

plated means dipped in. 10k gold means 10k gold.
10k dipped is not real and will eventually wear off and leave you with a green ring on the body part you wear it on.

10k gold is 10k gold through and through, and 10k gold plated is some other metal covered with 10k gold.
