The main thing to look for in any diamond ring is the color and clarity of the diamond. The best diamond colors are E-G, H-J. (They go from A, B, C, D, etc). Anything below J might be considered an inferior diamond color. The clarity means if the diamond is free from inclusions. The best clarity is VVS or VS, which means very, very slight, or very slight inclusions, which cannot be seen at 10X magnification. Then it goes to "eye clean" which means you cannot see inclusions with your naked eye. Then it goes to "slightly" included to "very included", which is I1-I3, where you can see the inclusions easily with your naked eye. The cost of the diamond is based on these two criteria, along with size. There are various auction sites that you can buy rings on, including eBay, and if you read the description of color and clarity, it will give you a guideline as to the value of the diamond. The cost of a ring will also be affected by the gold content, with 24K or 18K being the most expensive gold, with pure gold and 75% gold content in the metal respectively, then 14K, which is a very good grade of gold, to 10K or 9K which is less than 50% gold content in the metal. Some "brand" names like Bvulgari, Cartier, Tiffany, etc., will cost much more than the same ring by a "non brand" name, because you will be paying extra for the "brand" name. However, "brand" name rings will be made of the very best materials available.

There are definitely "brands" out there, but that is not the issue here. First, do you want your diamond to be an investment? Or do you just want it to look nice on your hand? What is your budget? Do you care more about size or quality? All of these things a good jeweler should ask you. Then, they should tell you about clarity, color, carats, cut (the four Cs). Depending on what is most important to you, then you decide. For me, I wanted a diamond that was good quality, and traded the two carat for a 1.25 carat that was a high quality, good clarity and color.
Be sure to get a diamond that is formally appraised, rated, and certified by an official laboratory.
Choosing a jeweler is probably an even more important decision. Find one who has a great reputation. Definitely check better business bureau online to be sure they don't have bad rep.

There is not really a brand. Ask to use a jewelers loop to look at the diamond up close to check for imperfections.

Jewelry stores buy their diamonds from the same wholesalers, usually Debeers. There are no brands, just lumps of carbon.
