It is a good experience. But do your bookings well in advance. It is the peak season.
Route is-
Bangalore - Hosur- Selam - Coimbatore(you can avoid the city by taking the bypass) - Palakkad - Cochin - Alleppey.
Alleppey is the town closest to the backwaters.
Another option is
Bangalore - Mysore - Gundalpet - Gudallur - Nilambur - Thrissur - Cochin - Alleppey.
This is through the mountains and you also pass through the Bandipur and mudumalai wild life sanctuaries.
Distance works out the same but no guarantees about the road condition.
If you are planning to break the journey at mudumalai/bandipur, this route will be ideal.
Compliments of the season and enjoy your drive!!!

Distance From Bangalore To Kerala

Take the route via hosur, krishnagiri, mettur, coimbatore, palakkad, angamaali. It would take more than 15 hrs.
The scenery would be pretty dry till one reaches palakkad, but after that its all lush greenery all round.
Now it is the ideal time to travel to kerala, since there is no rain currently.
