Santa brought my son a ball for his new hamster to go in, we put him in, he moves it but doesn't run... also the wheel in his cage.... he doesn't get on it... is this normal? I've seen ones in pet stores that just run and run and run.... I've read online they love to exercise in the evening and at night - is there a such thing as a lazy hamster? Or maybe he is just young yet?

I've had quite a few hamsters and they all have different personalities. One of them loved his exercise wheel and ball and would go none stop for up to five hours at a time (we hear it in the middle of the night, clack, clack, clack). Another one was fat and lazy, and would sit on his wheel and groom, groom, and eat.

Their "moods" change from day to day too. Some days they enjoy their ball and would run around banging into our furniture, other days they would sit and wait for us to take them out (we take them out if there is no movement for 5 minutes).

And maybe yours is young too. He may need to "learn" how to play on his toy. Push the ball just a bit and he'll get the idea. One of our babies learned quickly and now she wants out and play every night.

Finally, they are the happiest when they stuff their face. Really.

Well since hamsters are nocturnal, they maybe could be using the wheel while you sleep. Otherwise, I guess the hamster just doesn't like the wheels. That's okay, though. Some hamsters could just not like the wheel. If your hamster doesn't really run around in the ball, take him out. Keep the wheel in just in case, because maybe your hamster will use it occasionally. Maybe your hamster could get used to it later on. Just also make sure your hamster gets enough exercise.Good luck.

Their tiny feet falls through and its not fun the first few times they try their toys. Give him time.
They will like their wheels (inside the cage) better because they can get out when they want to. Try to spin the wheel after you set it up for him. It should free spin with minimum resistance from the walls, shavings, newspaper, and other paraphernalia in the cage.
Dont put him in a ball very long. He will just sit and not move anymore if he gets tired and may get thirsty.
