I think you need to ask a doctor these questions. You can get 100 answers on here but the fact remains, unless someone is in the medical profession out here, you will not get the real answers you need.

This is a lot more common in young adults, especially males, than you might think. He probably has a bladder that's "functionally" too small -- that is, although it might be physically a normal size, it doesn't stretch out like a normal bladder but instead experiences an intense need to urinate with a relatively small amount of urine. If he sleeps through the signals his bladder gives him that it's getting too full, that equals a wet bed. It's not something he has any control over and (usually) not the sign of any psychiatric or emotional problems, despite the popular myth. Believe me, he probably feels much worse about this than you do. Check out the National Kidney Foundation's article at http://www.kidney.org/patients/bw/BWyoungadults.cfm for more info.
They actually make alarm systems that are specifically designed to set an alarm off at the first instant urine starts leaking out of the bladder, in order to help him associate the signal of a full bladder (which his brain presently isn't registering) with the need to wake up and go to the bathroom. You can find several models of these at http://www.bedwettingstore.com For the first few nights, he'll probably sleep right through the alarm, or maybe wake up some time after his bladder is already totally empty. This is normal, and not a sign that the system isn't going to work! What you need to do is wake him up, and I mean really WAKE him up (a splash of cold water in the face works well, or maybe you can think of other ways) as quickly as possible after you hear the alarm go off, and encourage him to run to the bathroom right away and empty out whatever urine may be left in his bladder. After doing this for a little while, he should gradually start waking up more on his own, and waking up earlier in the process, until he finally learns to wake up in response to the "full" signal from his bladder BEFORE setting off the alarm. This might take a few weeks or months to complete the whole process, and you'll lose a little sleep at first, but the resulting dry beds should be well worth it for both of you! Good luck, let me know if this works out for you!!

No one is probably going to read this (way after the fact) but the alarm did nothing for me. My parents got that for me. However, I usually soaked my bed by the time someone got to me to wake me up. Parents tried limiting my liquids which did nothing. Even giving me a dollar every time I was dry did nothing.

maybe he has a sleeping disorder...i would ask a dr. about it.. even though it could be quite embarrassing..it will all be worth it if this problem is taken care of....or maybe you could call a medical hotline and ask your question to a medical professional...best of luck!

You might try this question in the psych section, I know there is a psychological reason for it, but it has escaped me at this time.
