My computer will shut off anywhere from 5 to 45 seconds after I log on my computer shuts off as if the power has been disconnected. It's plugged in correctly (I tried in both the powerstrip and wall, and the cord's securely in the back) and when it stays on long enough there's no weird processes runnign (spyware etc.). Any suggestions as to what i can do?

Classic case of CPU overheating.

Before starting the computer again, open the case and make sure the CPU fan is running. It is probably either unplugged, or shot.

OR, the heat sink isn't set right on the chip. You can blow your $200 chip in 30 seconds if you don't get this fixed.

Mr.Chi, you can't download software on a computer if it turns off after 5 seconds. I aggree with the first reply, take it to a profesional computer repair center, having a bad power supply may be the main problem, very much doubt it is a virus. The computer also may shutdown if it is overheating, so you got a point there mr.Chi

You may have been infected by a virus that does that on purpose or your system maybe overheating. I would check the CPU fan to begin with and if that checks out. I would reboot my system in safe mode and scan it fully with a FREE tool at http://safety.live.com (works flawlessly) to get rid of any viruses that may be residing on your system.

You can goto the boot menu by pressing F8 when your system is starting up after the bios screen.

Hope this helps ya. Send me a message or an email if you need more help.

Are you saying it shuts off after connecting to the internet? If so its likely a virus of some sort. If its just shutting off without internet connection, maybe its the power supply? see what programs you have running. or start in safe mode F8

Try cleaning out the inside of your PC. I recommend going to a professional PC place. You might have a bad power supply.
