I want to go to the Gaslamp District for new Years Eve, but don't want to drive. What's the most convenient route to take by train from Orange County?

Amtrak would be the best way. The route is called the Pacific Surfliner. Depending on where you are in OC, you would either get on at Fullerton, Anaheim, Irvine, or San Juan Capistrano. This will get you to the Santa Fe Depot Downtown. You then can take the Trolley to the Gaslamp Quarter(2 or 3 stops).

Just know that Amtrak does not run 24 hours a day so you would be in San Diego until the next morning.

Your other alternative would be to take Greyhound Bus to Downtown and then the Trolley to the Gaslamp Quarter.

If you take the train to San Diego and get off, you are pretty much in the Gas Lamp District........Just take a short cab ride....
